When it’s better to blend in

Don’t get us wrong, at Whalen Dentistry, we want all of our patients to embrace and celebrate their individuality. Because, after all, every smile is as unique as the person who wears it. But when it comes to fillings and dental restorations, we want our work to blend in seamlessly so all anyone will see is your beautiful, natural smile.

Tooth Decay 101

Before we go into the benefits of tooth-colored fillings, we think it’s important to educate you on how and why decay happens in the first place. Tooth decay, or dental caries is the number one chronic childhood disease. That is not to say that tooth decay does not affect adults, but it is much more common in children as they do not yet possess the knowledge and dexterity to properly care for their teeth. While a cavity caused by tooth decay is easily treated with a filling, left untreated it can have serious implications on overall health and quality of life.

The primary cause of tooth decay is sugar. Sugar that is allowed to remain on teeth is quickly broken down into acid that eats away at tooth enamel and causes cavities. The good news is, tooth decay is preventable! While minimizing or eliminating sugar from your diet is recommended, we realize this is not entirely realistic (this is America, after all).

The best thing you can do in the fight against tooth decay is to maintain a strict oral hygiene routine – regular brushing and flossing, and brushing or at least rinsing with water, or chewing gum containing xylitol after consuming sugary foods or beverages. You should also make sure to come see Dr. Whalen for your twice yearly check-ups so that if there are signs of decay, we can fill the cavity and stop the decay from progressing.

Benefits of tooth-colored fillings

There are many benefits to tooth-colored fillings versus traditional metal fillings, including:

  • No more unsightly metal
  • Blend in seamlessly with natural teeth
  • Safer without the use of toxic mercury
  • Won’t expand & contract with temperature changes like metal
  • Stop & prevent further decay
